Question:  This week?

Answer:  "Billy didn't hesitate.  Scruples was losing money at an almost incredible rate.  Not that i made the slightest difference to her; she could afford it indefinitely, but the figures would look so embarrassing when they were published in Women's Wear.  It was worse than embarrassing--it was a waking, unending nightmare.  People would laugh at her and the one thing in the world she must never be, never again as long as she lived, was a figure of fun.  She had to turn the operation of Scruples into a success.  Scruples must be faultless." Question:  Today?

Answer: "The Importance of Being Earnest

Lady Bracknell. The line is immaterial.  Mr. Worthing, I confess I feel somewhat bewildered by what you have just told me.  To be born, or at any rate, bred in a handbag, whether it had handles or not, seems to me to display a contempt for the ordinary decencies of family life that remind one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution.  And I presume you know what that unfortunate movement led to?  As for the particular locality in which the handbag was found, a cloakroom at a railway station might serve to conceal a social indiscretion--has probably, indeed, been used for that purpose before now--but it could hardly be regarded as an assured basis for a recognized position in good society." Random Bookshelf Reading 75

Random Bookshelf Reading 75

Question:  Today?

Answer:  "There is another kind of pattern with Saturn in the second house which is outwardly opposite yet inwardly the same.  This is the person who may have been perfectly comfortable as a child on the material plane yet who is denied a different kind of possession, a sense of inner values and of personal worth.  One cannot blame this, or any other characteristic, wholly on the attitude of the parents, however, for the individual has chosen his environment in the first place and moreover would not be sensitive to certain values and not others if a similar note were not resonated within his own inner structure.  So we will often see a person who, literally or symbolically, will sell himself for security because he has no other sense of values and in the end does not value himself.  He judges himself and others by how much he has, not by what he is." Question:  Today?

Random Bookshelf Reading 70

Random Bookshelf Reading 70

Question:  Today?

Answer:  "Karma  The word "karma" is used in so many ways by occultists, astrologers, and others concerned with the universal laws that guide our lives that, in considering the relation of astrology to karma, we should first of all clarify the meaning of the term.  Basically, it refers to the universal law of cause and effect, identical with the biblical idea that "Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." This law is merely the broader application of our earthly ideas of cause and effect; it is obvious that no one who plants thistles can expect to harvest roses.  The law of karma is similar to the law of Newtonian mechanics that states: "For each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."  The only difference between the universal law of karma and the mundane physical law of cause and effect is the scope of existence that each embraces.  The law of karma assumes that life is a continuous experience, not by any means limited to one incarnation in the material world.  The universal law of karma, then, can be seen as a way of achieving and maintaining universal justice and equilibrium.  It is, in fact, one of the most simple, all-encompassing laws of life.  It is inseparable from what some have called the "law of opportunity"--i.e., a universal law that places each of us in the conditions which provide the exact spiritual lessons we need in order to become more god-like. Question:  This week?

Answer:  "Taurus's Achilles' Heel:  Losing Security  Taureans fear losing security, either physical or emotional.  According to astrological wisdom, cash represents security to a Taurus.  This can be just a symbol, though.  Taurus can define security in any number of ways:  a home, a car, a corner office, a school, a wardrobe.  It could also be you.  Whatever it is, be warned that Taurus will hold onto it with a possessiveness that would even put Cancer to shame.  So tread carefully. Question:  Today?

Answer:  "Sixth House   Your Daily Routine also gets a bit less flexible than you're used to when Saturn comes through this house--unless you've got Saturn or Capricorn here natally.  In that case, you'll enjoy this transit, and the added self-discipline it will afford you.  On the other hand, this transit is hell on folks with Uranus in this house, who are used to having their day go more or less as they feel it should, who don't like to deal with time-frames, schedules, or appointments.   In a nutshell, you're about to Get It Together, on a daily basis, so whatever you do, every day, regularly, will need to be much more regulated and stabilized.  Get yourself a Daily Planner, learn how to make lists, and be on time for all your appointments." For him life is art, and he approaches existence as would a painter faced with a blank canvas, feeling empowered to create a world based solely on his idealized visions while striving to encapture sweeping abstract realities that he perceives as having remained heretofore out of humanity's reach.  He is naturally attuned to the ordered, nonchaotic energies of the universe and is thus both highly principled and philosophical.  Libra is a perfectionist, if not a platonist, forever focusing on conditions that might bring betterment, both for himself and for others; and yet wearing rose-colored glasses can also set him up for great disappointment.  He is liberal in his beliefs, a pioneer on the intellectual plane, which often puts him at odds with the more stodgy aspects of society.  Despite his freethinking, Libra is typically traditional in his need for a steady relationship, which nonetheless doesn't preclude extracurricular dalliances, in thought or deed.  He is attracted to an independent female, an intellectual equal, with whom he can live in mutual harmony, while still maintaining separate spheres of influence.  Love, for him, is a meeting of the minds, and a woman must share his appreciation for highbrow ideals, aesthetics, and a sensual if not etheric approach to sex. Same-gender relationships take on a brotherly quality, often prohibiting him from accessing deep, romantic feelings.  He keeps things light with a lover, his bonds smacking of glorified friendships, far more homoerotic in nature than blatantly hot and heavy. Random Bookshelf Reading 62

Random Bookshelf Reading 62

Question:  Today?

Answer:  "It is important to point out that the word "mysterious" has nothing to do with "vague" as far as Scorpio is concerned.  If by chance you feel that you get confused by or because of vagueness, it is because you are not using the strong side of your sign.  Mystery is knowledge, while vagueness for you is just a waste of time.  You are the king or queen of alchemy and can exchange one thing for another by wishing for it, which is something very few people understand or are capable of doing.  You have to remember that nothing comes easy to you.  For example, even if you happen to have gotten your money the old-fashioned way, by inheriting it, for some mysterious cosmic reason, you will be unable to gain access to it as easily as others would.  And another mystery is that you are a wonderful and enigmatic leader.  People don't forget you because you are the only one who knows how to get in touch with the most difficult side of your immensely imaginative, spacious mind.  You can usually express yourself in ways that reverberate in other people's ears.  They want more, so you lead them.  Sometimes, also in a rather mysterious way, you can scare people.  Take heed:  blockbuster movies earn millions by using scare tactics on their audiences.  People let go of something when they are afraid, which brings us back to what you, Scorpio, can do for us." Random Bookshelf Reading 61

Busy day today!  Well, here it is finally...

Question:  Today?

Answer:  "In the Rider pack we see each Ace held in a hand coming out of a cloud.  This symbol, seen also in other decks, teaches us that each element can lead us to spiritual mystery.  It also teaches us that all experience is a gift, from a source we cannot consciously know, unless we follow the deep spiritual journey shown in the Major Arcana.  For this reason I have ended each suit with an ace." Question:  Today?

Answer:  "Pisces  Your relationships are bound to center around "in sickness and in health" with the definitions of those words becoming blurrier and blurrier all the time.  So are you happier and more secure getting your nose hit with a rolled-up newspaper time after time to keep you behaving just so you don't have to be alone?  Or are you better off giving up the idea of togetherness and allowing yourself to drift in and out of functioning just to find some peace in life?  The best alternative is to find a happy spot to curl up in between." Question:  Today?

Answer:  Mind  The Sagittarian mind is philosophical and impractical, preferring ideas to applications.  Not that Sagittarius doesn't enjoy working through problems and coming up with an unconventional solution that works.  This is the eternal student, who asks all the big questions and seeks out the meaning of life.  There is nothing this inventive mind likes better than an in-depth debate."  (p.94)

Happy Halloween Everybody!!!

Question:  Today?

Answer:  "Mindfulness More than that, we must enter the moment.  We must take our thoughts off what has happened and what might happen and focus on what is happening right now.  According to Saint Francis de Sales, "We know the theology that God is here, right now... Remember that He not only is in this place with you, but in a very true way He is in your heart, in the very center of your spirit.  Saint Paul reminds us that 'we live and move and have our very being' in God. (Acts 17:28) You must excite in your heart a very real reverence for the God who is present to and in you." " (p.81)

(2) Second Six. Developing Gradually alternates to Proceeding Humbly (57)
The second line is a yin element at a yin place, central and correct.  Thus, the Yao Text says, "The swan approaches the cliff."  A cliff is a safe haven for birds.   This yin element responds to the yang element at the fifth place.  The fifth place is the supreme place for a king.  One at the fifth place is willing to support him and supply him with a good living.  The one at the second line is an honest person who would not reap without sowing.  His work deserves his earnings.  There is good fortune." Question:  This week?

Answer:  "The World Tree, with its roots in the underworld and its branches in the heavens, is a portrait of the relationship of the worlds to each other and the process of passing from one to the other.  The beanstalk, the ladder, the axis mundi, the cross, the grove of the goddess, the tree of life, the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the garden, and the kabbalistic Tree of Life are variations on this fundamental teaching.  These are also metastories, myths about myth itself, where myth is the other world, the other side of our mind, both psyche and the cosmos." Question:  Today?

Answer:  "Take Ten take away  One type of silent movie in which we all engage in is the replaying in our minds of interactions that we wish had played out differently. Who hasn't replayed a conversation in their heads, changing a stumble of words into witty, pithy, brilliant sound bites?  When doing this, what you are really doing, and enjoying, is editing.  The next time you think about the editing process with dread, as most writers are wont to do, remember the instant replays you've worked out in your mind and how much fun it is to get the situation right.  Bring this element of pleasure with you to the editing process, and you will succeed in refining your writing." Question:  This week?

Answer:  "Making a Commitment  It is important that each member make a commitment to the group that he or she can keep.  Such a commitment can be made after testing the waters for a few meetings.  Perhaps it's for a preset amount of time--say, three months.  It's not that everyone has to make every single meeting, but a sense of constancy makes participation in the group more valuable to everyone involved. It's likely that some people will value the group so much, they will remain members as long as the writing circle stays together.  It's also perfectly natural for people to leave and then to come back." Answer:  "Stafford's response here reflects the poetic standard he taught and lived by:  Any thought or idea, not just the ones we decide are good, has the potential to lead us to a poem.  A champion of the humble moments that unfurl to become poems, Stafford warns not to pull the threads too hard, or the poem will be lost." (p.68)

Question:  Today?

Answer:  "He'll ask you if you've ever shot anything, if you'd like to, if you ever thought about teaching your dog to retrieve.  Your dog will like him too much, will drop the stick at his feet every time, will roll over and let the hunter scratch his belly." (p.415)

From "How to Talk to a Hunter" by Pam Houston in What If?: Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers by Anne Bernays/Pamela Painter.

Random Bookshelf Reading 33

Question:  Today?

Answer: "Many of the responses were witty, some predictable; most, it seemed to me, were self-limiting.  One young man stressed technical proficiency above all else--he saw a poem as a well-oiled machine having only to do with precision.  Nothing could persuade him of the legitimacy of open forms, nor that poems might do something other than describe.  Nevertheless, the discussion that resulted had the desired effect: to allow the students to begin to think about and examine what the role of the poet (and of poetry) might be in a consumer-driven economy.  The precarious life of the "free-lance muse" gave them an opportunity to think about the life of a poet as other than a professional career.  We had a very lively discussion." (p.29, 30)
